General information about crowns
Dental crowns, also known as tooth caps, rebuild missing enamel due to severe wear, decay, and fractures. They also protect weak teeth from damage, making them a conservative way to prevent tooth loss from cracks and help root canal treated teeth stay strong and functional.
What are dental crowns made of?
We offer dental crowns made with durable ceramic materials that closely mimic the look of natural enamel. All-ceramic crowns are the best option to blend with your natural tooth color to provide an attractive and lasting solution.
We can customize the shade, shape, proportions, and size of each porcelain crown to match your natural teeth perfectly and restore natural beauty to your smile.
What can a dental crown fix?
There are several ways we use crowns:
- Improving the color and shape of teeth
- Rebuilding a weak tooth or a broken tooth
- Covering and supporting a tooth with a larger restoration where there isn’t a lot of tooth structure left
- Holding a dental bridge in place
- Covering a dental implant
- Strengthening the teeth in the face of chips and cracks
- Protecting a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy
Once the crown is placed, you care for it as you would the rest of your natural teeth.
Crowns may be part of a larger plan to restore your smile to its best possible state, and might be done with bonding, bridgework and other cosmetic and restoration dental care. Our dentists can answer any questions you have about which treatment is right for you. We serve patients all over northern California from offices in Redding and Red Bluff. What are same-day crowns?
CEREC is an state-of-the-art approach to creating precision dental crowns without the wait. Our team will evaluate your unique needs and determine whether same-day crowns or traditional impression crowns are best for you.
What’s the difference between traditional crowns and CEREC?
Traditional dental crowns are usually created in two phases. First, we’ll carefully remove tooth structure that’s been damaged by decay or fractures. Then, we’ll adjust the shape of the tooth to make space for your new crown, ensuring that it fits naturally with the rest of your bite.
Once your tooth has been prepared, we’ll take impressions and create a model of your teeth, which will be sent to a dental laboratory where your permanent crown will be fabricated. We’ll provide a temporary crown to wear in the meantime.
When it’s ready, you’ll return to our office to have your new crown permanently attached. In total, traditional methods for creating dental crowns can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks on average.
CEREC streamlines this process and eliminates the wait so you can get back to living life to the fullest right away. This method uses state-of-the-art technology to mill your permanent crown in our office while you wait.
CEREC crowns are made entirely from ceramic, which gives them a lifelike appearance that will blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile. By creating your crown in the same visit as your tooth preparation, we can ensure a precision fit and eliminate the need for a temporary restoration.
That means you get a beautiful, functional new tooth in just one visit.
Same day crowns are not ideal for every situation. Our expert team will help you understand which approach will give you the best results with the longest lifespan so you can smile with confidence for years to come.
