Why are gums important to your oral health?

Your gums are a vital part of the support system that holds your teeth in place and keeps them strong. The gum tissue covers the ridge of bone surrounding the roots of your teeth and creates a seal to keep bacteria away from the bone.

There are many issues that can affect your gum health. Some of these are the result of your natural anatomy, others happen as a side effect of medications or other medical issues, and many are related to gum disease.

We offer several options to address the most common gum issues.

Our periodontal treatment options

Every smile is different, and supporting your gum health requires a personalized approach. At Moore, Pascarella & Heinzen, we offer several procedures to keep your gums as healthy as possible. If your needs go beyond what we can provide, we work closely with skilled periodontists in the Redding and Red Bluff areas for advanced treatment options.

Scaling and Root Planing

Also called “deep cleaning,” or periodontal therapy, scaling and root planing is commonly the first step in reversing gum disease. This is a specialized treatment that completely removes bacteria and hardened tartar deposits above and below the gum line. This removes the source of inflammation, allowing your gums to heal and stabilizing your oral health. In many cases, scaling and root planing may be all your smile needs. If this procedure is not sufficient to get your gum health back on track, we partner with a trusted periodontist near Redding and Red Bluff who can help.

Gingivectomy

A gingivectomy removes excessive, enlarged, or infected gum tissue. This eliminates areas where plaque and food can become trapped, further irritating the tissue and making the problem worse. Gingivectomy reshapes the gums for better oral health and a more balanced smile.

Frenectomy

Frena are bands of tissue that connect the lips and cheeks to the gums and connect the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. In many people, the frena can be too short or too tight, which can create functional difficulties that interfere with normal speech and comfortable eating. A tight lip frenum is also associated with a gap between the two front teeth, called a diastema.

A frenectomy releases tissues that are too tight, allowing your lips and tongue to move normally and preventing damage to the gums. This is frequently recommended as part of an orthodontic plan, allowing the front teeth to move together and closing the gap.
